Equine Influenza alert
Cases of influenza have been identified this year in France, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, and the UK. As many of you are aware, there is plenty of horse and pony movements between the UK and Ireland. The risk of infection is increasing, and the Animal Health Trust advise an additional 6-month booster for competition/hunting/racing equines to limit the risk of spread.
The extra 6-month booster can be booked on a zone visit, in addition, there will be a 25% discount available to those who have already completed a full course of three injections. Subsidised diagnostic tests are available, so if you have any suspicion of disease please contact us. Nasopharyngeal swabs early in the disease are the most reliable method of diagnosis. For more information please go to the Animal Health Trust website.
Macarthur Barstow and Gibbs Ltd is a mixed practice providing veterinary services to ‘all creatures great and small’. When the Practice first began in the 1950’s, it was predominantly a farm practice, serving the hundreds of small farms in the vicinity. Working horses made up a proportion of the caseload, although tractors soon took over many of the jobs previously powered by the horse.
Over the next sixty years, the Practice grew from strength to strength, providing more specialised services as it grew. We now have small animal veterinary surgeons, each with their own area of interest, and also consultants specialising in orthopaedic surgery and ophthalmology. Physiotherapy consultations are also offered on a regular basis as are behavioral clinics. Our puppy parties are legendary and take over the Practice on a Wednesday evening.
The equine team work mainly as ambulatory veterinary surgeons, visiting many premises each day. We also have facilities for day cases at our own RCVS approved clinic. All of our equipment is portable allowing detailed investigations to be performed at home. These include ultrasonography, radiography and endoscopy. All members of the team undergo additional training in their areas of interest- these include lameness, back pain, acupuncture, and dentistry. Artificial insemination, using fresh chilled semen, is also available.
We are committed to improving the health and welfare of all horses, ponies, and donkeys under our care. Preventative health programmes are available for yards –we have the first two Strangles accredited livery yards in England, having taken the lead following an extended outbreak of the disease. Zone visits are offered to encourage preventative vaccinations and worming programmes designed on an annual basis.
