BURGESS NATIONAL RABBIT WEEK RUNS FROM MONDAY 26TH JANUARY 2009

Free health checks for bunnies are available as part of Burgess National Rabbit Week for the week beginning Monday 26th January 2009.

Burgess National Rabbit Week aims to improve the health of the nations pet rabbits and this year the focus is on fibre. We will be spreading the word that rabbits are "fibrevores" and require extremely high levels of fibre in their diet to remain healthy and happy.

Approximately four out of five rabbits treated by vets are suffering from problems related to poor diet ,which are often so far advanced by the time the rabbit is brought in they are difficult to treat.

Even if your rabbit looks fine,it is still a good idea to bring them in for an MOT. Our nurses will be giving out free samples, Happy Hopper certificates and lots of interesting information about bunnies such as:-

Rabbits are lagomorphs not rodents.

A baby rabbit is called a kit

The world record for the rabbit high jump is 1 metre!.

Prevention is better than cure and most rabbit health problems are easily avoided by feeding the correct diet.

Call the surgery to make an appointment for your rabbit's free health check.

Don't forget to visit the Burgess National Rabbit Week website at www.burgessnationalrabbitweek.co.uk.

MIKE OBORSKI NO BARRIERS AWARD WINNERS 2008

We were delighted to be nominated for and to win a "No Barriers" award in April this year.

The award scheme was set up in memory of Mike Oborski a long standing Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire county councillor who died in 2007, but had initiated the project based on a similar scheme in Poland.

The awards celebrated individuals, businesses and other organisations that had gone "the extra mile" for people with disabilities.

The Kidderminster practice won the award for "providing fully accessible facilities and a helpful service to customers with disabilities."

FREE EYE TESTS FOR DOGS

As part of our commitment to the lifelong health of our patients we would like to draw attention to a troublesome eye condition which you need to be aware of. Kerato-Conjunctivitis Sicca(KCS), also known as ‘Dry Eye’ commonly affects Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, West Highland White Terriers, Cocker Spaniels , Shih Tzus and associated cross breeds.

The condition can be diagnosed by a simple test, which causes no discomfort and can be performed without sedation.

As many as 1 in 10 dogs of the above breeds are affected and the condition can start at any age. As early signs are easily missed, irreversible changes can occur before a diagnosis is made. The Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is the only reliable way to ensure accurate diagnosis to avoid this early damage.

We are offering a free test to high risk breeds. This will be performed by one of our fully trained nursing team and any abnormal results will be referred to a veterinary surgeon for further advice and treatment if appropriate.

You are therefore invited to telephone for a ‘FREE DRY EYE TEST’. These appointments are available every weekday and will take only a few minutes.

As part of National Pet Month in April, staff and their families from both branches of the Vale Veterinary Group completed a 4 mile sponsored dog walk along the bluebell trail of Shrawley Woods. With the generous support of our clients, and medical suppliers, we raised a total of £1430 which we donated to Forest Cat Welfare, Forest Dog Rescue and Wyre Forest Animal Trust. We had an enthusiastic response from the staff, along with their 11 dogs, all of whom got on well. Both people and dogs had a great time, even through the rain towards the end. We would like to thank our clients for their kind donations and support for the event.
