Welcome To Our Website

As I'm sure most of you will have seen in the media recently, there have now been several confirmed cases of Avian influenza (bird flu) in the UK, but have you thought about how this impacts the husbandry of your domestic chickens, ducks or geese?

There is currently a legal requirement for all poultry and other captive birds to be kept separate from wild birds.

Macarthur Barstow and Gibbs Ltd is a mixed practice providing veterinary services to ‘all creatures great and small’. When the Practice first began in the 1950’s, it was predominantly a farm practice, serving the hundreds of small farms in the vicinity. Working horses made up a proportion of the caseload, although tractors soon took over many of the jobs previously powered by the horse.

Over the next sixty years, the Practice grew from strength to strength, providing more specialised services as it grew. We now have small animal veterinary surgeons, each with their own area of interest, and also consultants specialising in orthopaedic surgery and ophthalmology. Physiotherapy consultations are also offered on a regular basis as are behavioural clinics. Our puppy parties are legendary and take over the Practice on a Wednesday evening.

The large animal team, working as ambulatory veterinary surgeons, concentrate on farm and equine work, spending their time divided between different species depending on the time of year. We have farm vets with particular interests in different sectors such as dairy, beef or sheep. We also provide veterinary care to alpacas, goats, pigs and chickens. Farm vets regularly attend training and discussion groups to ensure the most up to date knowledge is available to our clients. We have led projects such as BVD awareness and Stamp out Scab, and have worked in conjunction with EBLEX to increase awareness of important diseases. Regular farmer meetings over the winter months provide not only a hot supper but detailed information on various new products, parasite control and infectious diseases.

Farm Work

Farm work is charged at an hourly rate rather than per animal. Over the years this has meant we chase animals less and the old adage ‘first - catch your patient!!’ has become less common. We can be much more efficient in the services we offer when working through a good handling system. For those who have not yet invested in an updated system, we are very happy to help design one and can show you those that work and those that don’t.

Medicines are sourced at competitive prices with no compromise on quality. Cheap alternatives available on line are not always as effective as the original product and can also be much more irritant when injected. We add value to products with free telephone advice, available 7 days a week.

OUR AIM IS

To provide professional veterinary care of the highest quaility, delivered with compassion & consideration in a relaxed & friendly enviroment.
