Blood Donors Required

There are certain critical situations in the hospital where blood is needed to save lives. There is no readily available veterinary blood bank in the UK for dogs and cats. If you have a healthy, fit, lean large breed dog (over 20kg) that you would be willing to allow to be a blood donor then please email rachel@eastcottvets.co.uk.We also need feline volunteers, particularly pedigrees who often have more rare blood groups.

All donors will be kept on a blood donor’s register and contacted when required. There will be occasions when a donor is urgently needed and may be unavailable so the more potential donors registered the better. For practical reasons donors should live within ½ hour of the Bath Road, Swindon Surgery.

The procedure of taking blood:

Blood is usually taken from the jugular vein (in the neck). Occasionally sedation is required. The donor should be rested for a day following the procedure but should suffer no ill effects.
