Our Services

VACCINATIONS

Our vaccinations are priced extremely competitively and all include a full health check of your pet. We send out letters to remind you when your pet is due a booster vaccination as part of our service.

Puppies

Puppies

Vaccinations can start from 6 weeks of age. The primary course comprises 2 injections, 3-4 weeks apart. This provides protection against :

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Leptospirosis
  • Parvovirus
  • Corona virus
  • Para influenza

See ’puppy package’ for other services …

Dogs

Unfortunately, the puppy vaccinations do not give lifetime protection. An annual booster vaccination must be given to your dog in order to maintain protection against these dangerous and distressing diseases.

Kennel cough is an extra vaccination which we recommend for dogs that will be boarded at kennels, but also those attending training classes or regularly mixing with other dogs at exercise.
This is also an annual vaccination.

Kittens

Vaccinations can start from 8 weeks of age. The primary course comprises 2 vaccination injections, 3-4 weeks apart.

This provides protection against :

  • Cat flu (calici and herpes virus)
  • Feline enteritis virus
  • Conjunctivitis (caused by Chlamydophila felis)
  • Leukaemia

Cat

Cats

Unfortunately the kitten vaccinations do not give lifetime protection. An annual booster vaccination must be given to your cat in order to maintain protection against these dangerous and distressing diseases.

Rabbits

Myxomatosis is a potentially fatal disease and is usually untreatable. It does not require direct contact with infected wild rabbits, being transmitted mainly via insects. In recent years we have seen increasing numbers of rabbits with this disease, and now recommend routine vaccination of all rabbits every 6 months.

VHD (viral haemorrhagic disease) is another untreatable disease, transmitted by insects, for which a vaccine is available. We recommend routine vaccination of rabbits against this disease every 12 months.

  • Free 5 month health and development review

This is a complimentary consultation to ensure your puppy is developing properly, and to address any problems you may have.

MICROCHIPPING

This is a permanent form of pet identification, simply administered at the practice by injection, with a vet or nurse.

A microchip the size of a grain of rice is implanted under the skin, no matter what the species. After your pet has been chipped you register them, for life, with a central database. If the unthinkable happens, and your pet goes missing, the international network of scanners held by Dog Wardens, Veterinary Practices, Animal Welfare Organisations (RSPCA and Dogs' Trust etc.)  will identify your pet by their chip number and reunite you. Identichipping is part of the PETS passport requirements.

WORMING AND FLEA CONTROL

The practice offers a variety of safe, effective products to meet your needs in protecting your pet against parasites. Our nurses offer free appointments to advise you on these products, and can administer them if you wish.

NEUTERING

Spaying of female pets is strongly advised. This prevents unwanted pregnancies, phantom pregnancies, cystic ovaries, ovarian and uterine tumours, and reduces the incidence of mammary tumours. Spaying can help with behavioural problems.

Castrating male pets prevents testicular tumours, unwanted pregnancies, reduces roaming, reduces the incidence of prostate disease in later life, and can help with behavioural problems.

DENTAL CARE

Dental disease is very common in our pets. Our nurses offer free consultations to advise you on all aspects of dental hygiene.

If your pet’s teeth are beyond the help of tooth brushing, then we are fully equipped with an ultrasonic scaler and dental machine. We are able to offer scale and polish procedures and can also undertake more advanced dentistry, including tooth extractions, as required.

Rabbits are particularly prone to teeth problems, and our dental machine enables fast, effective burring, thereby reducing anaesthetic time and risk.

OPERATIONS

All operations are carried out to the highest standards by our experienced veterinary surgeons.

Your pet will be admitted by a vet on the morning of their procedure, and any queries can be addressed at this time.

To ensure your pet’s health, pre-anaesthetic blood tests may be advised, especially for older patients. These can be processed in our on-site laboratory, giving rapid results.

We use safe, modern anaesthetic agents, have fully-trained staff monitoring each pet throughout its anaesthetic, and operate strict standards of cleanliness and sterilisation. Pain relief is routinely given to every patient. Full post-operative care instructions will be given verbally and in writing when you collect your pet following its stay with us.  Routine post-operative consultations are included in the cost of your pet’s procedure. Suture removal is also included in the price.

X-RAYS

X-RayRadiographs are extremely useful in the diagnosis of various conditions. They can tell us what is happening to the bones in the body e.g. presence of infections, fractures, tumours. They also give us information about internal organs e.g. heart, liver, lungs, kidneys etc. We have automatic x-ray procesing to ensure excellent quality radiographs and to shorten the time your pet is anaesthetised.

We can undertake x-rays to fulfil the criteria of both the Kennel Club Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Schemes.

ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY

Whereas an X-ray will show us the shape of the heart, whether there is an enlargement, growths, etc, an ecg will actually tell us about the various components of the heart and how they are functioning in relation to each other. It does this by measuring electrical impulses at various points across the heart. It is a very non-invasive procedure and no sedation is acquired.

ULTRASOUNDUltrasound

Our high quality new ultrasound machine allows us to investigate certain abdominal diseases more fully.

It is very useful for disorders of the liver, spleen, kidneys and bladder.

It is also used for pregnancy diagnosis and if required we are able to freeze an image on the screen and print a copy.

Ultrasound is usually possible without anaesthetising the animal, which makes it a very safe procedure.

BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

We can accurately monitor blood pressure. Hypertension is quite common in older cats. This is also non-invasive and is performed on the conscious pet.

ENDOSCOPE

This expensive new piece of equipment increase our ability to treat your pet. It enables us to look inside your pet’s oesophagus and stomach, as well as other areas. This can help us identify disease, retrieve swallowed foreign bodies, and enable biopsies to be taken.

INTENSIVE CARE

Intensive CareWe are fully-equipped for cases requiring more intensive treatment. Our qualified nurses provide continuous care and frequent monitoring of critical patients hospitalised at the surgery.

The small animal incubator is particularly useful for the post-operative care of exotic and small patients.

A purpose-made oxygen tent enables supplemental oxygen to be given to patients with breathing difficulties.

LABORATORY

Our in-house laboratory enables us to perform a considerable range of tests, and give rapid results.

Blood tests are extremely useful in the diagnosis of many types of disease. In addition, pre-anaesthetic blood tests are a valuable safety measure which can be run on the morning of your pet’s operation. In emergency situations, pets can be tested immediately, the results enabling timely decisions to be made on treatments. We also offer more specific in-house tests for certain diseases e.g. FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus)., FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and Canine Parvovirus. We can also blood-type dogs requiring blood transfusions, thereby minimising the chances of a reaction.

For infections, we undertake bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing. Fungal tests for ringworm can also be performed.

Mating dogs can be a tricky process, but we can help! Vaginal smears may be examined under a microscope, or a special blood test which measures hormone levels can be used. These guide us as to when ovulation occurred, enabling the timing to be adjusted with the aim of achieving a successful mating.

An extensive array of more specialised tests are performed at an external laboratory. We have our samples collected by courier, which often enables same-day results.

HOME VISITS

We have surgeries in 3 convenient locations and offer extensive opening hours. However if you are unable to attend the surgery, or in certain emergencies, vets are available for home visits.

Think carefully before requesting a home visit. You will be required to control the patient and only limited treatments can be given at home. You will need to phone the surgery at the earliest opportunity to arrange a home visit, and specific times for visits cannot always be given. As you would expect home visits are more time consuming and more costly than consultations at the surgery.

PET TRAVEL SCHEME

PETS was set up to allow cats, dogs and ferrets to visit certain countries, with a passport, without the need for quarantine on their return,  All EU and many non-EU countries are included in the PETS Scheme.

What do you need to do?

The local DEFRA office in Leicester can offer advice on export requirements. They can be contacted on  0116-2....

REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS

Prescriptions can often be repeated within a four month period without us seeing the animal at the surgery. By law animals must be deemed to be under veterinary care. After four months we request you bring your pet, using longterm medication,  to the surgery for a complete veterinary examination. For repeat prescriptions please telephone the surgery 24 hours in advance, so that your medication can be readied at a surgery of your choice.
